Ardkinglas Woodland Garden
|
 |
"I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree"
Joyce Kilmer, 1886-1918 |
 |
Situated only two miles from the TREE
SHOP is the Ardkinglas Woodland Garden, where
you will see one of the finest collections of conifers
and rhododendrons in the British isles. The collection
includes one of the tallest trees in Britain, a Grand
Fir (Abies grandis), measured at over 202 feet and the
"Mightiest Conifer in Europe" a Silver Fir (Abies Alba)
with a girth in excess of 32 feet.
The Garden is a blaze of colour in the
Spring and Summer with splendid rhododendrons and many,
newly introduced shrubs and trees. The Autumn colours
in the Garden are also worth seeing, with the glorious
reds, yellows and oranges looking at their finest. Many
of the plants that you see growing here you will find
for sale at the TREE SHOP. |
|
This remarkable multi-stemmed conifer is perhaps the oldest and
best loved tree in the Garden, it is thought to be in excess of 250 years old.

Clachan Farm Woodland Walks
|
| If you would like a breath of fresh air
after your journey, or a vigorous walk to work up an appetite
for our scrummy homebaking or just a gentle stroll after
your visit to the TREE SHOP why not take advantage of the Clachan Farm Woodland Walks.
Signposted from the TREE SHOP,
there are a selection of walks which take you to an ancient
burial ground, a tree house and a viewpoint. For free
information leaflets, giving more details on the graveyard
and a map of the Woodland Walks please ask at the TREE
SHOP |
 |
Ancient Burial Ground (allow 20 mins - 100metres)
|
| The medieval burial ground of Kilmorich
can be found at the start of the Woodland Walks, just
a short stroll across the field. Dating back to the 13th
Century, there are examples of stone carvings and evidence
of an early Christian Chapel within the graveyard walls. |
 |
Tree House (allow 45 min, 900m)
|
| From the graveyard this loop trail follows
the old "coffin road" that now leads to a Tree House.
A must for all children (and adults!) to explore, the
Tree House allows you to get inside the canopy of an ancient
ash tree. |
 |
Viewpoint (allow 60 min, 600m)
|
This walk requires a steep ascent of the
slopes above Loch Fyne and hillwalking boots are recommended.
The path follows the route taken by the workers who built
the aqueduct and reservoir that supply water to the nearby
hydro power station. Once at the viewpoint the climb is
well worth the fabulous views down the Loch and up Glen
Fyne.
